Compression or No Compression.
During my 25 years in broadcasting I have seen this question raised numerous times online in blogs and forums. So what is the answer? There a few things to consider once you have recorded your voice over. Who will get the vo next? Most of the time when you are doing a finished vo where you have provided music and are submitting to a radio or tv station or a client who is your go between, compression really isn’t necessary when you consider the audio chain of those outlets. Most will compress the audio before airing. I sometimes do some normalizing to -6db if the voice over is a soft compassionate read. In my studio I have set up, I have found that I have tweaked it perfectly for my voice.
If you find yourself submitting your vo over to a production house, compression is out of the question in my opinion. The producers will be adding music and sfx to your voice and will likely compress the final product.
When I am doing fully produced liners for online stations, I do compress the finished product to enhance the listeners experience. Take into consideration that many listeners will be on laptops or mobile devices. The frequency range of those tiny speakers cannot compete with large stereo speakers or home theaters.
Another thing to take into consideration is the Mp3 is a form of compression. Mp3 mostly takes out frequencies that are not audible to the human ear. I have found on several occasions that producers will request a raw .wav file in order to have the nuance of the original recording.
I know I haven’t really gone very deep on this subject, but I wanted to supply my experiences in a nutshell. Keep on keeping on be the best you can be.
